Weekly Update 2/27 - 3/3
Tomorrow, February 23rd is our Student Council sponsored Spirit Day – Superhero Day. As a reminder, students may wear shirts, capes or superhero attire, but please refrain from wearing masks or face paint. Our Superhero Spirit Day coincides with our CCE Bingo Night. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for bingo at Hill Country Middle School. We look forward to seeing many of you there!
Please plan on joining us immediately after assembly tomorrow for our Volunteer Appreciation Tea. Staff members will provide assorted teas to honor our volunteers. This is our chance to recognize our many volunteers for their dedication and support of CCE.
Looking ahead, February 28, 2017 is an Early Release Day and March 1, 2017 is Walk to School Wednesday
In Math we will be going back to topic 12 in enVision: Measurement.
For Social Studies we will continue to learn about Spanish Missions in Texas and focus on the effects.
In Reading and Writing, students will taking their persuasive piece through first draft and editing.
Weekly Update 2/21 - 2/24
Thank you for the sweet treats and Valentine's cards. I love this class and how kind they are. I especially want to thank Sarah (Mack's mom), Erin (Catherine's mom), Annie (Brady's mom) and Chrissy (Luke's Mom) for providing the treats for our party. Please remember that Monday is a holiday and there is no school.
In Math we will be continuing Topic 14 in enVision. Focusing on Geometric Shapes.
We will be moving onto Social Studies and learning about Spanish Missions in Texas.
In Reading and Writing, students will be discussing how text features and graphic sources are used in non fiction. Students will continue working on their first drafts for their persuasive piece.
Weekly Update 2/13 - 2/17
It was so great seeing all of you that were able to come to Open House. I am so proud of our class and all the hard work they put into their learning. On Tuesday, Valentine's Day, we will be have a small class party with a peanut free sweet, salty, and healthy treat. Candy may be passed out but students will not be able to eat it at school.
In Math we will be continuing Topic 14 in enVision: Lines, Angles, and Geometric Shapes.
For Science we will be finishing our Weather Unit and moving onto Social Studies.
In Reading and Writing, students will be continuing to work on text structure by focusing on compare and contrast. We will continue looking at persuasive texts and making connections that will help students begin their first drafts.
Weekly Update 2/6 - 2/10
Tomorrow is S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Day! Our Specials, Lunch, and Recess are at the usual time. The rest of the day we will be rotating through different activities and learning lots!!!
In Math we will be reviewing Topic 11: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators and then testing on Tuesday. We will be skipping Topic 12 and 13 in enVision to come back to at a later time. On Wednesday, students will start Topic 14: Lines, Angles, and Shapes.
For Science we will be continuing our Weather Unit and focusing on forecasting the weather and interpreting weather maps.
In Reading and Writing, students will be looking at the different types of text structure and how they can organize their own thoughts on paper.

Students are back on track and working hard.

In Math we will be continuing fractions. Students will focus on simplest form and comparing fractions. Our test is set for Friday, January 20th.
For Science we will be starting our Weather Unit and looking at patterns in our world around us.
In Reading and Writing, students will continue working on text structures and focusing on cause and effect. We will also be discussing context clues and working on homophones.

Weekly Update 1/9 - 1/13
I hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed your family time together!!! I want to thank all of you for the class gift I received before the holidays. The gift card was used to have a date night with my husband and no kids. We LOVE Austin Land and Cattle on N. Lamar and can only eat there a few times a year. It was so nice to order a little different than usual, relax, and enjoy the night. THANK YOU!
In Math we will be working on enVision Topic 10: Fractions. Students will focus on equivalent fractions, simplest form, and comparing fractions. Our tentative test is set for January 19.
For Science we will be looking at the Water Cycle and how water interacts with land.
In Reading and Writing, students will be working on text structures and focusing on cause and effect. We will also be discussing most common misspelled words and homophones.
Please see the flyer below for information on our CCE Parenting with Love and Logic class which, begins Jan.13 8:00-9:30. It will continue on Fridays until Feb. 17.
Weekly Update 12/12 - 12/16
In Math we will be reviewing Topic 9 and taking the test on Wednesday, December 14th.
For Social Studies, students will be using their explorer research to make a fake Facebook page (no account needed ;). They will create a profile as if the explorer was alive today, or that Facebook existed way back in the day!
In Reading and Writing, students will be continuing to work on main idea and supporting details, and summary. They will be working on publishing their feature article this week.
On Friday, we will be having a Winter Party in 4th grade. We will be playing some games outside and then enjoy a little brunch after that. Students will then go to any 4th grade class they pick and will do the activity that is provided by each teacher.
Weekly Update 12/5 - 12/9
This week in 4th grade is a busy one! We have Walk to School Wednesday, Career Day is Thursday, and we will be going to WHS to watch the Nutcracker on Friday.
In Math we will be continuing Topic 9: Patterns and Equations. Our Topic 9 Assessment will be Wednesday, December 14th.
For Social Studies we are continuing to summarize the reasons for European exploration and the settlement of the Western Hemisphere. Students will be focusing on specific explorers and their impact on Texas.
In Reading, students are practicing main ideas and supporting details to create summaries. In Writing they are focusing on their feature articles and will begin taking their ideas through the writing process.
Weekly Update 11/21- 11/25
In Math we will be working on 4 digits divided by 1 digit division. I am encouraging the students to keep practicing their long division at home = the more practice, the better and faster they will be! Our Topic 7/ 8 Test will be Wednesday, November 30th.
For Science we will be reviewing and taking the Energy test. Students will be taking The Energy and Electromagnetism unit test Tuesday, November 22nd. If your family will be leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday early and your child will be missing school that day, please let us know as soon as possible. This way we can make arrangements for your child before they leave for break.
In Reading and Writing, students will be continuing to work on main idea and supporting details. They will be taking their research and using the information they find to brainstorm and pre-write a feature article.

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day. We will honor our Veteran's after morning assembly. Please feel free to join us for this wonderful celebration and remind your child to wear red, white, and or blue.
In Math we will be using what we learned in Topic 7 to work on Topic 8. Students will have a test on Friday over both Topics.
For Science we will be continuing to focus on electromagnets and energy. Students will be taking The Energy and Electromagnetism unit test Tuesday, November 22nd. If your family will be leaving for the Thanksgiving holiday early and your child will be missing school that day, please let us know as soon as possible. This way we can make arrangements for your child before they leave for break.

Weekly Update 10/31 - 11/4
Our field trip to Longhorn Caverns was an eventful one. We got a late start and then had to switch busses halfway there due to mechanical issues. But we arrived safely and still had time to take an amazing tour through the caves!
Please note that Monday is Halloween, and no costumes are allowed at school. Pre arranged treats will be handed out at the end of the day and no candy will be passed out. On Tuesday we have a regular schedule and will be continuing with our daily lessons. Please be mindful of bedtime and what our brains need to have a successful day:)
In Math we will be continuing multiplication and looking at Topic 6 in enVision: multiplying a multiple digit number by a double digit number. Students will have Topic 6 Test next Friday, Nov. 4th.
For Science we will be continuing to focus on Forms of Energy and looking more closely at magnetic fields and forces.
In Reading and Writing, students will be starting to read non fiction text and focusing on what authors do to make informational text more exciting to the reader. This will lead us into our next piece of writing that we will take through all steps in the writing process.
Weekly Update 10/24 - 10/28
Thank you for meeting with me last week for Parent Conferences. It was so nice getting to know more about your child while sharing all the great things they have done so far in 4th grade!
Our first field trip to Longhorn Caverns is this Friday, October 28th. Please remember to pack your child a lunch and send them to school in a pair of comfortable shoes to walk in and a light sweater or jacket to wear down in the cave. A water bottle labeled with your child's name will be helpful as well.

In Math we will be working on Topic 5: Multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits
For Science we will be focusing on light and electrical energy while discussing how forms of energy change.
In Reading and Writing, students will be discussing poetry elements and the different genres they will be writing throughout next week.
Weekly Update 10/17 - 10/21

In Math we will be continuing multiplication and looking at Topic 4 in enVision: multiplying a one digit factor with a multi- digit number. Students will have Topic 4 Test next Friday.
We will be starting Science again and focusing on Forms of Energy.
In Reading and Writing, students will be practicing revising and editing; and be introduced to a new program called Keyboarding without Tears.
Weekly Update 10/11 - 10/14
We are well on our way and soon to be finished with a quarter of the school year. Today an email will be sent out from Skyward to sign up for parent conferences. If the dates and or times do not work for you, please contact me and we can come up with another plan. Please remember that Monday, October 10th is a School Holiday and there will be no school.
Students have been working hard on their research for our upcoming Native Texas Living History Museum and they wrote their speeches today. Please encourage your child to practice their speech throughout the long weekend. Speeches do not need to be memorized but should be 30 to 60 sec. and filled with expression.
Costumes and props are due Wednesday. Please remember that the more resourceful you can be, the better! We do NOT want you spending money. Be creative! Today in class we talked about the types of props students can bring. They are only allowed to bring items that were used as tools- no weapons (real or fake). Models and representations of artifacts are allowed if they are safe for all. See link below for ideas.
Our class is the Lipan Apache Tribe and we have 5 bands that will be split amongst the 4th grade classrooms. If you would like to see your child present, they will be given their room assignment on Wednesday. If you are available, please join us Friday, October 14th from 11:15 - 11:45 (in and out presentations = each tribe will give around a 5 min speech and there will be 5 different Texas Tribes represented). Please note, if you are not able to make it Friday, we will be recording the presentations during dress rehearsal.
Next week in Math we will be continuing multiplication and looking at partial products, arrays, and algorithms. FYI: the enVision Topic 2 Assessment was changed by the company after our class took the test, which effected their grade??? Question 3 and 11 were changed and so answers that were right are now wrong. Gotta love technology ;) I am updating their correct grade in Skyward. So... students will now be given hard copies of the test with an answer document.
For Social Studies next week we will be preparing for our Living History Museum by practicing our speeches and acting out our scenes.
In Reading and Writing, students will start their first draft for their Unfortunate Event story and will begin to take it through the writing process.

In Math next week, we will be starting Topic 3: Number Sense: Multiplication Properties and will be combining this with Topic 4: Multiplying by 1-digit. The test for these Topics will be at the end of the Quarter.
Next week in Social Studies we will be continuing our discussion on Native Tribes. Students will begin their Native Americans of Texas Living History Museum project by researching a specific tribe. Please sign and return the information page given to your child today for homework. See below.
For Reading, we are reading a variety of books to help us think like a writer. Students will be brainstorming and prewriting their our own stories based on an unfortunate event.
Weekly Update 9/26- 9/30
Next Friday, September 30th is International Day. This year’s theme is “Together, We Are One.” Students will share cultures and foods with their peers at Cedar Creek.
In Math next week, we will be continuing Topic 2 in enVision: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers and Decimals. The test will be next Thursday, September 29th. A study guide is attached and will be sent home with re teaching pages on Monday.
Next week in Social Studies we will be continuing our Unit on Texas Regions and Native Tribes. Students will begin their Native Americans of Texas Living History Museum project by researching a specific tribe. More information to come.
For Reading, we finished our class novel and will now be writing our own stories. Students will be taking their story through the writing process and focusing on story elements and dialogue.
* Students need earbuds/ headphones to use with their iPads- it would be great if they had a pair that could be left at school so that students have them everyday :)

Weekly Update 9/19- 9/23
Next week in Math, we will be starting Topic 2 in enVision: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers and Decimals. Students took their Topic 1 Test and attached are directions on how to check their grade. There are also resources you can access to help your child at home.
During our Science/ Social Studies time next week, we will be starting our Social Studies Unit on Texas Regions and Native Tribes.
For Reading, we will be starting Guided Reading groups and focusing on Elements of Fiction so that students can write their own stories.
Weekly Update 9/12- 9/16
Tuesday is our first early release day! Fourth grade specials will be from 10:10 - 10:45, lunch and recess will be from 11:50-12:30 and dismissal will be at 12:50.
As we are getting farther into the first nine weeks, relationships are being built and assessments are helping me get to know your child's academic strengths. I appreciate those who have filled out the survey emailed to you in the Weekly Update.
Next week in Math, we will continue working on decimal place value and will focus on comparing and ordering decimals. Students will have their Topic 1Test on Thursday, Sept. 15th. A study guide was sent home in their Thursday Folder today and will be posted on our class website.
In Science next week, we will be looking at how temperature and density relates to the water cycle.
For Reading, we are continuing to practice Read to Self and Read to Someone to build our stamina. Students are practicing Listening to Reading through our class read aloud each day. I am continuing to assess their Beginning of the Year reading level and will be starting Guided Reading groups soon. In Writing, students will be brainstorming and writing ten minutes everyday.

Weekly Update 8/29- 9/2
This second week of school seemed to fly by. We are still working on getting to know one another and practicing procedures with expectations in mind. If you were not able to make it to Back to School Night please see the presentation below or on my website.
This week in Math we practiced place value and discussed relationships, ordering, and rounding whole numbers.
During our Science time, students reviewed the States of Matter and discussed temperature. Students did a FOSS Investigation to prove that water expands when hot and contracts when cold.
In Reading, we went to the school library and checked out individual books and a class book. As we return from Recess, a read aloud is a great way to get back on track. I will be reading Series of Unfortunate Events: Bad Beginning to them each day to discuss and or model reading strategies.
For Writing, students are practicing writing their thoughts and feelings down in response to what they are reading.
***Our school will be participating in Dot Day again this year. We will be making class shirts to wear on this day and on any of our field trips. Please provide a white t-shirt that is one size larger than your child's size by Tuesday. Thank you for those who have already sent these in and to the Helsels and Browns for sending extras in too.
** Please send a set of earbuds/ headphones with your child to school. It would be best if they can leave them here so that we have them everyday to use. With our new iPads comes a lot more accessibility to apps that have sound***

Weekly Update 8/22- 8/26
This first week of school was filled with lots of fun activities to build relationships and practice our classroom procedures.
This week in Math we began Topic 1 in enVision and reviewed place value. We will continue place value next week.
During our Science and Social Studies time, students worked in partners and groups to get to know each other better.
In Reading and Writing, we began talking about genres and how to choose books. We set up our Writer's Notebooks and had some free writing time.
*** Please send a set of ear buds/ headphones with your child to school. It would be best if they can leave them here so that we have them everyday.***
**Our school will be participating in Dot Day again this year. We will be celebrating it on Friday, September 16th. We will be making class shirts to wear on this day and on any of our field trips. Please provide a white t-shirt that is one size larger than your child's size by next Friday, September 2nd. If you are unable to purchase a t-shirt for your child please let me know before next Friday, as well as the size of t-shirt they are currently wearing, and I will provide a t-shirt for them. We are also in need of sharpies in multiple colors for this project. Please let us know if you have any that you are willing to donate some of these sharpies for this classroom project.
